Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV first drive review: ’90s look, cutting-edge tech These cars all offer an acceptable amount of range at mainstream prices, but none has sparked (no pun intended) an EV revolution. Volkswagen is throwing the full weight of its manufacturing infrastructure and dealership network behind EVs, and says the ID.4 will compete for sales with popular gasoline vehicles like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.įor now though, the ID.4 is most likely to be cross-shopped against similarly priced electric cars, such as the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, Nissan Leaf, and the recently unveiled Chevrolet Bolt EUV. When it was caught cheating on emissions tests, VW pivoted to EVs to save face, but this is much more than a PR effort. That’s pretty ambitious, considering the ID.4 only exists because of the Volkswagen diesel scandal. (It's the exact opposite of driving my Golf where you need to carry speed through the corners to avoid allowing the turbo to spool down.) And it's extremely relaxing to drive long distances, with the Travel Assist being better than I expected (and much better than competing systems I've tried out, including Tesla's Autopilot which makes you keep having to move the steering wheel for no reason). I mean, I learned quickly the fastest way through a corner is "slow in and fast out" - and with the AWD the power is always more than adequate - in fact I often surprise people on the road without even trying. and the ride and handling is perfectly acceptable for a relatively large, heavy family carrier.
(In fact, I recently hopped in a loaner Tiguan and found myself reaching for the instrument panel to shift gears.) The slowness of the infotainment that the reviews all harped on is really only an issue for the first minute after you hop in the car, then it's fine once everything is done "loading". We easily got used to the slightly unusual choices they made in the cabin but I can see how they would confuse a car reviewer who hops from car to car.
